How to Dye Racoon Hair Yourself 🦝🎨
Racoon Hair—also known as Tiger Stripes—is one of those hair trends that keeps making a comeback. The bold contrasting stripes create a unique look and can be done on both your natural hair and human hair extensions.
The best part? You're completely free to choose your color combination! Whether you prefer classic black, bright rainbow shades, or subtle tone-on-tone looks, your creativity is the only limit. 💜💙
In this guide, we'll show you step by step how to create your own Racoon Stripes.

🎨 Plan Your Look First
Before you start, think about the style you want:
Thick or thin stripes?
Lots of stripes or just a few?
Perfectly even or intentionally messy?
The classic Racoon Hair look uses black stripes, but that's definitely not a rule.
Some fun color combinations include:
💙 Blue hair with purple stripes
❤️ Light red with dark red
💚 Green with black
🩶 Light grey with black
For this tutorial, we'll use Grey Skull as the base color and Blackout for the stripes.
🧤 What You'll Need
It's much easier if someone helps you, but it's absolutely possible to do it on your own with a little patience.
You'll need:
Headshot Grey Skull
Headshot Blackout
A tint brush
A mixing bowl
Disposable gloves
Old clothes or a towel to protect your outfit
💡 Tip: Hair dye can permanently stain fabrics. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and protect the skin around your hairline with petroleum jelly or a rich cream.
🌈 Step 1: Dye Your Base Color
Start by applying your base color all over your hair. In most cases, this will be the lighter of your two chosen colors.
In our example, that's Grey Skull.

💡 For the brightest results, remember: the lighter your starting hair color, the more vibrant the final result will be.
🦝 Option 1: Dye Racoon Stripes on Your Own Hair
This version is often called the Messy Racoon Style.
It creates a more natural, slightly imperfect look and is usually the easier technique.
Here's how:
Hold one section of hair tightly.
Use your tint brush to paint horizontal stripes.
Choose any stripe width and spacing you like.
After the processing time, rinse thoroughly and condition your hair.
This technique takes a little practice, especially on the back of your head, so having someone help can make things much easier.
✨ Option 2: Dye Racoon Hair on Extensions
This method is perfect if you want very clean and evenly spaced stripes.
Important: Only human hair extensions can be dyed with direct hair dyes. Synthetic hair won't absorb the color.
You'll also need:
Adhesive tape
A piece of cardboard
Here's how:
Lay the hair extension flat on the cardboard.
Place strips of tape across the hair wherever you want the gaps between the stripes.
Use your tint brush to color all uncovered sections.
After the processing time, rinse thoroughly.
Make sure the hair section isn't too thick so the color can fully saturate every strand.
🐾 Three Popular Racoon Hair Styles
🦝 Messy Racoon
A casual, natural-looking style.
Simply paint the stripes freehand with your tint brush. They don't have to be perfectly even.
📏 Precise Racoon Stripes
Perfect if you want clean, sharp lines.
Mask off the gaps with adhesive tape before applying the color.
🎨 Wide Racoon Stripes
The easiest option.
If you're creating very wide stripes, you can even apply the color carefully with your gloved fingers instead of a brush.
💡 Extra Tips for Great Results
Work section by section.
Always test new color combinations on a small strand first.
All Headshot hair colors can be mixed together, allowing you to create your own custom shades.
A tint brush will help you achieve cleaner, more defined stripes.
